Here and there along the coast of Nova Scotia one discovers the remnants of boats that have been retired from service for one reason or another. Sometimes they have been replaced by a newer, more seaworthy vessel. Sometimes it’s because the boat and the owner have had enough of the hard life fishing. In good times, fishing can be lucrative, and modern vessels are more automated and safer than they used to be. But it’s still cold, dangerous, and physically hard work for most of the crew.
The boats pictured here, and many others like them, have disappeared, now. Increasingly, seaside properties are being purchased by those who love the ocean, but who do not fish the sea. A mouldering wreck may be an interesting subject for a photographer, but to others it’s just an eyesore that needs to be removed.
